What We Love About Sisal

Sisal is a natural fiber that is produced from the long leaves of the Agave Sisalana cactus plant. Grown in arid environments, sisal’s tough fibers are ideal for many hard-wearing products like twines, ropes, and rugs. Sisal floor coverings are remarkably versatile and extremely durable, enabling us to produce rugs and carpets in a range of shades and styles.

Sisal's exceptionally strong fibers will stand up well in high-traffic areas like living rooms, family rooms, offices, and hallways as well as add serene comfort to a bedroom. Sisal rugs have a subtle pattern and muted beauty that easily transforms a room into an elegant and harmonious room. Plus, the natural color palette of sisal is an excellent foundation for any design style or theme.

If you want to learn which rug material is right for your lifestyle, how to select the right size rug for your space, or how to buy a rug online, head over to our blog post Rug Buying Guide - Everything You Need to Know for a deep dive.

A sisal rug or carpet reflects your unique style and your commitment to sustainability and the environment. Sisal is a renewable resource, biodegradable and free from pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers. These attributes also make natural sisal a clean addition to your home. However, the majority of sisal rugs have chemical adhesives and a latex backing. If you are looking for a 100% chemical-free option, our EarthSISAL™ is backed with a recycled natural fleece backing via a mechanical needle-punch process. No adhesive, no chemicals.

With a sisal rug, your first line of defense is always to vacuum regularly. Vacuuming regularly will pick up dirt and dust from the sisal fibers, thereby preventing embedded soil that can resurface. Sisal fibers do not like to get wet, which is why we recommend that you do not use this fiber in kitchens, laundry rooms, and the like. You may choose to apply a spray-on sealant that acts as a barrier to reduce the rate at which natural sisal absorbs liquid.

If ease of maintenance is a priority, our selection of stain-resistant sisals is a great place to start. With all the texture and appeal of sisal, these sisals have been coated with a stain-resistant material to ease your mind while still making a timeless style statement.

Wanting the look of sisal but without any worry? Our exclusive SynSisal® collection offers a beautiful and durable synthetic sisal option.

We also recommend a walk-off mat upon entry to your home and a no-shoes-in-the-house policy. All of our weaves come with guidelines for care and maintenance to help you care for your purchase and are accessible under the Care tab on each weave page. For more general care guidelines, please visit our Care Guides page.

Sisal works beautifully as either a focal point or a subtle foundation. Its robust texture, range of hues, and variety of structures make it one of the most versatile materials in interior design.

Timeless Foundations

  • Bouclé sisal (like Madrid or Oslo) is a classic and offers a sophisticated foundation that suits traditional, bohemian, transitional, coastal or minimalist styles.

  • Basketweave sisal rugs like Halifax or Kent add texture and charm to any space, from dining rooms to hallway runners.

  • The zig-zag pattern seen in Porto adds energy underfoot.

  • Our Vashon has a lovely herringbone pattern and is stain-resistant.

Add Color

  • If you love to thread color throughout your design style, a sisal rug finished with colorful serged edges is the perfect match. See our Color Splash sisal for colorful border options.

  • Use sisal as a base layer and add vintage rugs in colorful patterns on top.

Flexible for Any Layout

  • A custom-crafted sisal rug adds an elegant and versatile design element to your space.

  • For a traditional wall-to-wall installation, sisal creates a seamless, neutral base. We carry extra-wide sisals for extra large rugs or installations.

Not sure what size you need? Read our "What Size Rug Do I Need?" resource to learn more about custom rugs.

Sisal is highly absorbent and can act as a natural humidifier in dry climates but it will not fare well outdoors or in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, or mudrooms where contact with water is a risk. Many people love the look of a natural sisal area rug in a kitchen since it is a warming counterbalance to the hard surfaces and hard-working appliances that make up a kitchen.

If bringing the look of sisal into your kitchen is desired, applying a spray-on sealant will act as a barrier and reduce the rate at which natural sisal absorbs liquid.

Additionally, our selection of stain-resistant sisals or our exclusive SynSisal® collection of synthetic sisals are both dependable options.
